Bernadette Protti Has a New Identity

After being released from prison in 1992 at the age of 23 she left Ventura County. I figured out that what she did was try to throw off the public by telling them that she had moved away, changed her name, and was pursuing an arts degree. Well, she did leave the state not as soon as she was released though, and as it turns out she ended up pursuing a science degree. I am not exactly sure when she finally left California, but she did not change her name until 1994, and then she married which made her last name change again. So she was able to almost completely disappear from public view. She continued through college and received a Master's degree. She is a nurse and medical writer. She is very well known and writes for a highly publicized scientific journal. She is married to a (hmm... I am not sure what to call him) He has worked as a professor and works in the science field. She has a family, but I do not know how many children she has. She has moved around a lot since she left Ventura county. (Ventura County is where the California Youth Authority's Ventura school is) A recent photo of her looks almost identical to the new photo that I have posted. She just looks alot older.

Just a side note: I wrote a few years ago about seeing an actual photo of Bernadette on a website where she was employed at one time. In fact she was on the board of directors. I won't go into it again too deeply, but I decided not to publish the new photo mainly because she seems to have gone out of her way to hide her identity. It does not appear that she has ever had any more run ins with the law since that time. And the release of her new identity, would truly devastate her new life. I did not want to be responsible for that.  I am really not sure if her husband and children know, but I am certain no one who has worked with her knows. She does not like attention drawn to the case at all. In fact, the photos which were once on the net have ALL been taken down (except one small photo hard to see photo) since the blog post Bernadette Protti Found! was written. I did make a copy of the photo. I copy all of the photos that appear on the site just in case they are deleted at some point.

BLESS YOU for not revealing any identifying information on her!!!! She did her time, paid her debt to society, and as someone who was victimized by the person she ended up killing, she deserves her privacy! I'm a few years older than Bernadette and the girls she went to school with, but I, too, was bullied by popular kids when I was in school and I know how badly it hurts. Sure, her reaction was extreme, but it's in the distant past now and she deserves to be able to leave it behind!

I am sorry for what you had to endure at the hands of bullies. It's cruel and so stupid; which we realize as we grow older and become middle aged adults.

However, you mentioned that for Protti, "it's in the distant past now and she deserves to leave it behind." It isn't over for Costas's parents and they will never be able to leave it behind; thus the civil suit they are trying to do. If anyone has information about the identity of Protti, they owe it to the grieving parents to share that information. That is the very purpose of civil litigation. Sometimes our criminal courts don't give out justice very well, and victims' families are left no other option than to sue civilly. (Example: the OJ Simpson case)

No, it will never be "left behind" for Costas's parents. I can't imagine what it is like for them.

I don't know. I wonder how Bernadette has learned to live with what she did. It seems unfair that she was allowed to get an education, get married, and have children - where Kirsten got none of that.

I still see it as an impulsive act that Bernadette committed when she was still a child, and I do think she has paid her price. I feel every sympathy in the world for Kirsten's family, but I don't agree with their going on with litigation. It won't bring their daughter back. It's very hard to choose sides on this one.

I'm also very close in age to Bernadette, and we all had people pick on us in school. I knew then, as I know now, that murder is wrong. But, some kids mature slower than others, some are more impulsive than others, some need peer approval more than others.

I have read though, that Bernadette was not exactly the Kellie Martin sweetness that she was portrayed as in the movie. I read about continuing to seek drama even while incarcerated. I guess I had hoped she would spend a lot of that time thinking about and dealing internally with what she had done. Who knows? She is a nurse now, so knowing she is in a service-oriented occupation makes me think she wanted to be better than her previous actions.

Having said that, I'm still quite curious as to what she looks like now. And if she looks very much the same now as she did then, what's to stop people who know her now, from seeking old photos of her on the web and figuring it out from there?

TV_Junkie said...

I think it is noble and admirable that you have not posted it.

Although I too was curious - obviously - Bernadette Protti is suffering enough having to live with what she has done. I dont know whether 7 years was enough to "pay her dues" to society, but since that's what was ordered, I guess it must be.

Although I do believe her having a new identity is not fair to the murder victim's family who may have a pending suit against her, I also feel there is no reason for Bernadette to suffer any more public humiliation than she has already endured.

I think it is very admirable that you have allowed her to maintain some anonymity.

Oh.. and Karla - thank you for posting your comment. It helps us realize Bernadette is a real person with real feelings and a real family.

I have never heard that once someone is released they cannot contact anyone they were incarcerated with. It makes sense I guess, but it was new news to me.

God bless...

I think it's best to leave her to her private life. You did the right thing by not revealing her current identity.

What keeps people still interested in this case, aside from the movie getting aired frequently, is that the matter touches so many of us for different reasons. We cannot help but be curious about Bernadette.

I wish her well. This is a person who at a young age made a life altering mistake in the heat of a moment of rage and fear. It wasn't a random killing or a premeditated one. I don't see her as someone who could habitally inflict harm on others now. This was a one time incident and Bernadette is probably not the bad person many might guess her to be. It seems pointless for Kirsten's family to continue this; it won't bring their daughter back. Time to let go of the hate was a long time ago.

Bernadette, if you do read these posts, I'm sorry you have been through so many hard years. I'm not condoning what you did, but I realize how you must have been punished beyond belief already. You deserve your privacy, and yes you deserve happiness. Best wishes to you.

The Costases have not filed a lawsuit against Bernadette Protti. First of all, a name change is almost always a matter of public record. Secondly, if they had indeed filed a new lawsuit against her, they would be in no struggle to find her new identity. The court has to tell them. Otherwise, anyone could just change their name anytime someone is going to file a lawsuit against them, and then they couldn't be found.

Traciy Curry-Reyes said...

They did sue. See blog for info.

Don't forget that although this was a crime of passion, a confrontation was planned. And when Kirsten tried to run away, Bernadette went after her. Hardly a split-second decision.

And what I remember VERY well is spending that summer and part of the school year wondering which of the girls at our school (if any) murdered Kirsten. I can't remember the exact timeline, but it went on for months - and Bernadette (in one of my classes) just acted normal. She had PLENTY of time to confess, to apologize, and to otherwise not drag on the man(girl)hunt, which meant almost every blonde girl in the school was questioned.

I still think even now Bernadette could own up to what happened and do some public service/education with it. She should show us that she has remorse. Perhaps make some good could even come of this all if she could help teens learn to overcome some jealousy issues - realize how transitory high school life really is - and perhaps save a life in the process.

I wish I could see a current picture of Bernadette. I am so courious about her now. How do you get away with murder? I don't care what the girl did to her is school. You can not justify murder. She killed someone how do you live with yourself. Nice girl? What kind of nice girls kills?

Does anyone know where her family is now, her sister her mother and father where are they?

NcMysteryShopper said...

Her mother and father, Elaine and Ray Protti are in California. They are active members of the Retired Employees of the City & County of San Francisco, Inc.

I am wondering what all the hush - hush is about her name. She edited her classmates profile to include her married name, so I don't think she is hiding from anyone.

Traciy Curry-Reyes said...

I don't believe that it is the correct name. She changed her name so it's unlikely that it is the correct name updated on a class profile unless someone else found out the real name and posted it. The classmate sites allow anyone to post. Anyone can create a profile under any name and say that it is them. But thanks for the post.

Bernadette Protti is a murderer. Who cares about her anominity. This is why future crimes happen. Everybody is concerned with the criminals rights. They change their name and live a normal life until something else set them off. Like her getting jelous again!!!!!! A picture was posted of Kristin's mom......where is her privacy. I guess victims dont matter. Only criminals deserve their rights. I think everybody should know who she is so that society can protect themselves from her.

ok for pauladec63, so bc u r beng bullied ts ok to kill that person? That murdering slut is out there living her life when she took away kristen's. She deserves to burn in hel. almost everyone is a bitch in highschool, ive been bullied to, but its not right to kill someone know matter how much they hurt you. Its in the past you say? HER PARENTS have to miss her every single day because of what that bitch did, and trust me when she dies, hopefully soon, she'll go to hell. And if her family doesn't know what she did yet, then i hope they know soon. god isn't on her side. she murdered a young beautiful teenaged girl over what?

Maybe Krista's parents should have taught their daughter to treat others with kindness and respect. While I don't agree with Bernadette's actions, I can empathize with her. And while I can empathize with Krista's parents, I don't think they should bring a civil suit against this girl. They should take some responsiblity in this.

I too was a student at Miramonte during the murder and ensuing wait to find the killer. I remember accusations flying and all if them were wrong. My two best friends were the main suspects and one was singled out by the Costas's in public. I know it affected them deeply and everyone who lived through the surreal time. I only met Bernadette once and it was in the summer after the murder. She didn;t seem out of the ordinary.

She may have "paid for her crime" but that doesn't give her a pass. Many people, not the least of which is the Costas family don;t get to move on fro this. They live iwth iot every day. I must say that seeing her profile on C;assmates was disturbing to say the least. I can't imagine anyone who hasn't stayed in touch with her would really want to communicate with her unless they are fascinated by the sick and famous. As a matter of fact the olny post I saw on her profile was from someone just like that.

The girl/woman above who wrote using such foul language, poor grammer and obvious anger in her tone is just as capable of murder as anyone else. No one wants to believe they are capable of evil. News flash: all mankind is capable of wrong doing...we see it every day. I do NOT condone what Bernadette did...she deserved her sentence and probably then some. My heart grieves for both families. I don't know what each day must be like for any of them. What I do know is that forgiveness is a powerful thing...a very real thing and all people will need it extended to them at some point in their lives. It takes a big person, with a little Guidance and intelligence, to offer grace where absolutely none is deserved. It isn't easy at ALL...but it changes everything. The whole thing sucks...bottom line. But love covers over a multitude of sins.

Anonymous said...

One more thing..."Truecrimecurious" doesn't obviously know the true nature of God. First of all, you should capitolize His name...secondly...you are NOT God and can't judge where a person will spend eternity, so worry about your own issues and your own salvation.

Anonymous said...

I would just like to put in that it isnt really necessary to be calling her names. If you honestly wanna wish someone to hell then you may be the one heading there. It isnt anyones place to judge her except for God. As for her parents having to live with it, i know it would be the hardest thing in the world, and to find forgiveness would be just as bad if not worse. But instead of critisizing this woman you may want to pray for the victims family. God forgives murderers. And he is on anyones side that believes in him and repents!

Why should Krista's parents take responsibility because someone killed their daughter? And how do we know they didn't teach Krista to treat others with kindness and respect? She was a teenage girl who bullied people but does that mean she deserved to die? Because Bernadette was bullied does that give her the right to kill someone?

Anonymous said...

For those people who were not there at the school, it is not right to judge either person based upon what you saw in the movie. A movie is just that, a fictional depiction based on the true story but certainly some things were exaggerated for purposes of television. In all honesty, the movie painted Kirsten as a very spiteful person who enjoyed laughter and popularity at the expense of others. She appeared cruel, heartless and like she was far superior to every other girl there. Her parents' even portrayed themselves and Kirsten as if they were better than everyone else. I am certain that while Kirsten's parents love their daughter... I am just as certain that Bernadettes parents love their daughter just as much. Realizing that this was "just a movie", unless you were there and know the people involved, you can't be sure of how either person really was. No matter how someone acts or treats someone, it is still not a good reason to kill and she definatley deserved to be punished. Nonetheless, the sentence Bernadette was given was the amount under the LAW. The Costas knew that at the time. She did serve her time and while she is no longer incarcerated, I am certain she lives with it daily. To call her names or say she is going to hell is not right. Furthermore, whether she goes to heaven or hell is between her and her maker. If people want her identity for purposes of tormenting her, then what makes you any better? It may be cliche, but TWO WRONGS DO NOT MAKE A RIGHT. Grow up and before you start judging others for their actions, you may want to remember this... before you pass judgement on someone else, you must first take a good look at yourself. Think of it a different way, what if it were your friend, your sister, your daughter... would you want them subjected to the ridicule you are subjecting Bernadette to? NO, you wouldn't. Unless Bernadette somehow did something to you personally, then it isn't your business anyway. That is the problem with teenagers anyway and what contributed to how this all happened. There is so much peer-pressure to "fit in" and if you don't fit in... people make fun of you, call you names and so forth. Some people are just not happy unless they make everyone else miserable. Maybe if everyone just accepted that people are different and that's what makes them unique, there would be alot less teen suicides, teen fights and obviously teen murders over the pressure to just fit in and be accepted. Anyway, this is just the opinion of a mom in Virginia who went to high school in VA in the 80's. Fitting in isn't worth it. Be yourself and if people don't like you for who you are, it's their problem and their loss.

Bernadette should not have been jealous. She was so much more pretty than Kristen and she should have been the social butterfly. I know in my high school she would have been.

As far as the lawsuit, LET IT GO, she gone and no amount of money is going to change that. The Costas need to show they aren't about the money and quit using this as an excuse to make some!

I went to Miramonte High School and was one year ahead of Kirsten and Bernadette. Miramonte was both the best and worst thing that happened to me in my life. It was an amazing place that stimulated growth and intellectual curiosity. I haven't seen the movie but I doubt that any of that could be portrayed via a movie. There was a good deal that was healthy about it as a learning environment.

But the social strata there tended toward the superficial (as it often does in teenage years) and much too much emphasis was placed on being popular. I don't believe that Kirsten was a bully- none of those popular girls were- it was more complex than that. They were sweet and kind too, and smart and funny, some of them....They just believed what society told them about themselves being 'above' others for reasons not based on individual character or other kinds of worth. And nobody was there to sort of keep that in check for them. For those of us who were not popular though, life was devastating.

I am deeply saddened by the death of someone who did not deserve to die, but, I do understand how low self esteem can twist you up inside. Something needed to change in that kind of environment.

Maybe now we can heal some of those wounds and learn to treat each other with more compassion in high school, everywhere.

I have a comment for Teresa. You sound extremely ignorant and young. This has nothing to do with Kirsten's parents proving themselves as 'good-natured citizens'. This has nothing to do with who is prettier than whom. This is about justice. How would you feel, if your child or loved one was brutally murdered over jealousy and the lack of self-control as a human being? You'd want to punish that person as well. I believe Bernadette got off quite easy, for the magnitude of the crime she committed. I do not know what kind of an overall person she is and perhaps she wasn't your run of the mill, malicious person who deserved to be in jail longer. The best we can hope for is that Bernadette has been rehabilitated and would never entertain the idea of ever doing such a thing again. We can also hope that she teachers her kids..right from wrong..from the 'mistakes' she's made and the 'mistakes' others have inflicted towards her. As for the Costas', they're never going to regain what they've lost. I do not blame them one bit, for dragging this on longer. They're well within their rights and are entitled.

I never knew either of the girls. I am sorry that the Costas lost their daughter to this. Nobody and I mean nobody deserves to be murdered despite how horrible they can be. May Kirsten rest in peace. Kirsten was not a nice person from what I saw in the movie but again, may she rest in peace.

As for Bernadette, I can understand completely why she did what she did. I am the same age as these girls are/were and I remember growing up in the 80's. Bernadette was young and from the movie, it appeared that she came to this school from a private one. It was exciting yet overwhelming. I gathered that she was a sensitive, passionate girl who only wanted to make friends. From what I saw of the movie, this Kirsten was not going to have Bernadette in "her beloved group of friends." There are many Staceys/Kirstens out there who are given far too much power by their peers and they take a lot for granted and become monsters they we unknowingly create. We create them because we are either scared of them or we take the silent abuse so we can have that social standing that the Queen Bee has. When Stacey/Kirsten accused her of trying to hit on her in the car when they were suppose to go to some dinner, I think Bernadette snapped. Belonging was the most important thing to her and Stacey had the power to destroy her. So, she had enough of Staceys garbage and snapped. A person can only take so much of this crap until they snap. I see it all the time in my work and those who are involved in school shootings. This is the basis for this stuff. Peer Abuse!

Folks, please get educated on this serious problem we have in our society. This is not "girls being girls" with their cattiness and hurtful behavior. This is full on silent, covert abuse. Even though this story was very rare back in the 80's, its all too common now. We do not enable rape, child, domestic or elder abuse so why enable peer abuse?

I hope Bernadette is well and I also am glad the author did not give her up in this blog. Shes suffered enough. She paid for her crime and has been out a long time. She is a productive member of society now. May Kirsten rest in peace and may Bernadette have peace.

Regards,
Elizabeth Bennett

I know this is an interesting case. The real Bernadette emailed me a few times to see if I really knew who she was. This woman really does not want anyone to know who she is, and I can understand that which is why I decided not to post. I have received a lot of hate mail from people who were pissed that I did not reveal the info. I should have just posted that she was alive and well and that's it, but at the time I was blogging about this, I was actively searching for her and decided to post my writings as I was searching. All of a sudden I became the stalker. It was crazy. And I thought god, I have so many stories that I chase. This is what I do. It was not just a mere fascination with Bernadette. When the writer sent me Bernadette's new identity and asked me to confirm if this was it, I knew that it was her. I felt like it was her, because I knew that most likely any other blogger that would have found her new identity would not have wasted any time posting it. After so many months went by and never saw it, I knew that it was her. Also, they knew that yes I do know who she is and they know which pic I have too. I guess after so many months of me not posting it they realized that I am not that kind of person. I do have integrity. Though I wonder how she is living. I wonder if she can be truly happy looking over her shoulders this way. I have had the chance to interview several murderers who are now living amongst society and doing well. They have all told me that they basically look over their shoulder. Many fear retaliation. However, if I find that the person is still committing crimes and is still a public charge then yes, I do post current info. Just nothing personal like phone numbers, addresses, work places etc.

I feel bad for Kirsten's family and truly hope she was not as mean as she was portrayed. I watched the movie today and feel as though it was totally one sided and did not develop Stacy's/Kirsten's character enough. It made Stacy/Kirsten out to be the villain which is unfair, she was the one MURDERED.

Bernadette needs some sort of life now and I am glad that this is finally happening. Bernadette regrets what she did and can never bring back Kirsten. It would not solve anything if her new identity was revealed- it would only create more heartache! I don't think Bernadette should tell anybody her new identity but remain anonymous and carry on with her life. It is only her parents that should know the truth. Please can we wish Bernadette a happy time after the suffering. Xx

If this truly is Bernadette Protti posting here, you should know that a murder this heinous is not something anyone just "forgives and forgets", least of all my family. I was there that night. I saw Kirsten's blood squirting all over my father as she struggled to breathe. She knew she was dying and the horror on her face as she bled out before us was something none of us will ever forget.

You may have served your time under the law but it will NOT be forgotten. The grotesque, premeditated nature of the savage murder you perpetrated demand that this follow you for the rest of your life.

Nobody has put blog on site because everybody is left speechless that somebody could pretend to be Bernadette Protti. I should not have mislead you and that is exactly what I have done! Sorry. The truth always comes out in the end whatever the consequences of you thinking you can get away with it. A Murder in Wales had not been solved until 30 years after the killing! The MURDERER had been tracked down by forensic evidence. What I am trying to say is that whether Bernadette made a full confession or whether the police figured it out. It really does n't matter becuase Bernadette has to live with this for the rest of her life, it will forever be on her conscience that she has taken the life of another person. But police would have eventually found out like some blogger revealed whether it be at the time or years after like the case in Wales proves- 30 years! That's a life sentence!!! This will always haunt Bernadette Protti, but it is good it was dealt at the time. Bernadette should have handed herslf in straight away rather than let the whole situation drag endlessly! She made it harder for herself... Also, she will forever live in constant fear of somebody finding her new identity, the fear of retaliation!! Bernadette will have to tell her family one day that she is a MURDERESS or live a lie! Honesty is the best solution. I seriously do not believe in revealing the new identity of Bernadette but I do think she should tell her family when the time is right- that or her family finding it out. At the end of the world it is a very small world although of its size! What I am trying to say is what goes around comes around- and even MURDERES and MURDERESSES get MURDERED!!! It's sad but true... I am in no way condoning what Bernadette did but I can understand why and how it happened. I went to high school in the "80's" and I'm telling you if you were not the best at everything from school, popularity, looks, friends, if you were just a tad bit different, god forbid and help you because your were laughed at, scorned and made to feel like you were a loser. That is the reality of that generation especially in high school. What happened between Bernadette and Kirsten, tragic as it is, needs to be studied and understood today so that parents, teachers and kids alike can understand and know that bullying has to stop. Let's face it, no one had a clue how much Bernadette was hurting, in pain and silently suffering. No one really understood it back then and if a kids was a victim of bullying or made to feel like a loser, the kid was ashamed and afraid to speak up, leading to emotional pain, leading to horrid behaviors. All I can say is I am so glad I did not grow up in Orinda, Ca.

Someone just posted that Bernadette Protti "acted" (killed) in a "fit of retaliation." Retaliation for what? We all get picked on, left out, made to feel inferior by our peers while in high school...but we don't murder. Taking another person's life is not an act of self defense or an equal act of "retaliation" because one is made to feel inferior. I survived my peers' mean behavior in high school in the 80's; millions of us did. Ms. Protti would have survived it as well. She just didn't see that at the time.

However, being picked on and having a "fit of retaliation" by murdering a peer is still unacceptable. I think it's important to be clear about that.

That being said, I hope that Ms. Protti has truly moved on and is a law-abiding citizen who is raising her children to be confident no matter what their peers say or do. This is of the utmost importance if we are to support a system of rehabilitation. We have to acknowledge that prisoners are released all the time, and we need to feel safe in our communities. So, I wish her the best of luck...for her sake and the sake of her children.

I feel sorry for Kirsten's parents but they should have taught her to not put down and pick on others. Every time you bully someone you run the risk of someone not so sane freaking out and doing something like this.

Anonymous said...

Kirsten was a "snotty cow" but you get people like that everywhere- does n't matter where you go there will be a "Stuck up Lady Muck" who will belittle others, but that does not give the right for an individual to take the law into their own hands and Stab that person with an 8 inch Kitchen Knife! What Bernadette did was cowardly that she had to use a weapon to confront the bully! She should have fisted Kirsten instead of stabbing her- then she would be here today! Again, using her fists is violence to which I do not condone but at least she would not have died unless Bernadette is Superwoman with Super punches, joke! Bernadette is a COWARD!

I apologise for blog I sent "Kirsten is now laughing!" This was an eror and I was disappointed that I had sent the blog without double checking it was right. Sorry for any distress caused.

I meant Bernadette is now laughing beacause the sentence she has been given is too lenient in my view. I cannot believe that she has spent so little in Juvenile Hall. I seriuosly think Bernadette has had it pretty easy. The way Bernadette has turned her life around is praisable but who is to say that she will not re-offend? Nobody can ever be certain! People have felt sorry for Bernadette who is the Killer after all. This case is very different to others in my opinion as you feel sympathy for the Killer not the Victim, and it should NOT be like that... If Bernadette would have attended a Women's Prison then she would have had it hard! But she did not nad I do feel she has had it easy. She has continued with her education, she has married, and had cildren etc. All these were denied to Kirsten, and I do not blame the Costas fighting to sue Bernadette all the way because she had committed a tremendously henious crime. One which cannot be forgiven, and forgetten, one that will always be a constant reminder of its brutality! My comment of Bernadette laughing is meant in "jest" as many people at the exact same age who would have committed a similar crime would have got a life sentence. But Bernadete did not because people felt sorry for her because she was bullied. Bernadete should have ignored any bullying as retaliating makes it worse. The way Bernadette confronted Kirsten with a knife was not premeditated in the way she planned to Murder Bernadette, but it was incredibly foolish and recless of her. I strongly believe that Bernadette is a COWARD! I think this case has been hushed down too much! Peace
for Kirsten and her family. X

I wish her well. This is a person who at a young age made a life altering mistake in the heat of a moment of rage and fear.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
it was only life altering for Kirsten. Bernadette has been able to go on and lead a successful happy life. I too was a girl like Bernadette and teased unmercifully from girls like Kirsten. I remember this article very well when I was a teenager , I am the same age as Bernadette and Kirsten. I made a life for myself too and went to a high school for the gifted to get away from girls like Kirsten. HOwever, I never killed anyone and never would, no matter how mean some of those girls were. I feel for Bernadette, however, it doesn't excuse the life she took away. It isn't fair that she's been able to go on, change her identity and run away from her past. Kirsten's family never can run away from it.
Believe it or not, I *DO* have a clue...I could have easily been Bernadette Protti. I missed almost half a year of school in the eighth grade due to incessant teasing and humilation. But I had the inner strength to carry myself through it and went on to succeed. I feel bad for both girls, but that still does not take away the fact that Bernadette took away someone's life forever, someone's child. And she has been able to go on and do everything she's wanted to. Its not fair. Do I understand? YES. I am exactly the same age as these two girls and at the time of the murder, I would have despised Kirsten and hated girls like that. It still doesn't make murder right.
Interesting case, that seems to get more interesting as the years go on. The real question that seems to be asked here is "Does Bernadette deserve to be free?" In my opinion she has not served her time...7 years for a life is not enough.
On the subject of not enough time dealt out considering the crime there was a case about a girl named Shanda Shearer...2 of the girls who tortured & murdered her have not done enough time to fit the crime. They also are out in society having to deal with the same thing as Bernadette. Whilst I believe Bernadette was bullied I also believe her reaction to be extreme. I think depression played a big part in her extreme reaction.
I doubt highly Bernadette is reading this & I think it is very petty & childish to come in here claiming to be her.
My heart goes out to Kirsten's family & also to Bernadette's family. Bernadette's family have paid a price for a crime they did not commit. I also feel Bernadette is making the most of her second chance...Leave her be..
Anonymous said...
I too remember reading about this crime in Rolling Stone back in my college years and I've never forgotten it. I didn't then and I do not now have any sympathy for Bernadette, wherever she is. The fact that she only got 7 years is incredible and she should thank her lucky stars. Plenty of people in this country have been freakin' executed for committing the crime of murder by stabbing. She had ample opportunity to simply turn her car around and go home that summer night back in 1984, but she didn't. Good Lord, she stalked her victim from house to house before stabbing her. Being 15 years old is no excuse. By that age a person knows damn well that sticking a knife into another human being is insane no matter how much you've been teased and humiliated. I'm certainly no expert on the subject but it seems to me that being stabbed repeatedly with a huge blade, bleeding profusely while trying to suck in just one more breath and knowing you are probably dying certainly hurts a hell of alot more than someone saying something unkind.
This is the strangest blog I have ever read...also intriguing...like watching a train wreck and wondering how it's gonna turn out. What is with the person pretending to be Bernadette? That was just very odd.
Anyways, I watched the movie tonight and read the ending about how she served 7 years and was out on parole, so curiosity got the best of me, which led me "here"!
I feel horrible for both families involved. I am sure that both agonize over what they should have and could have done to prevent this. I am glad that the movie is still aired frequently. Young girls can be very mean and spiteful, and usually not knowing that their "fun" can drive another girl to her breaking point...in Bernadette's case, the breaking point resulted in murder. I am not saying that Kirsten deserved to be killed for whatever torment she supposedly put Bernadette through. I am saying that girls will be girls without realizing how they can affect others. I think that we have come a long way as a society in dealing with bullying type behaviors. The movie is a reminder that we need to continue talking with our girls (and boys) about how to treat others, and how to react to others. I teach my kids that true popularity does not vome from being beautiful and having lots of money...that does not define you. "Popular" means that you are well liked by your peers...not feared! And true friends will like you for who you are if you are honest and caring and thoughtful and being a good friend back to them. That is what it means to be popular. I also like to tell them, "Get in where you fit in." Meaning, don't try to force relationships. If it was meant to be, it will happen. Most importantly, be kind to others and people will like you and want to be your friend.
I hope that whoever and wherever "Bernadette" is, she is teaching these lessons to her children...the lessons she was never taught, or maybe never picked up on, and had to learn the very difficult way. I hope she has found her place in life and accepts herself for who she is.
If it was your child murdered.. I think you would feel differently. This woman was and still is capable of murder. As the Dr.'s say.. people don't change their spots. No amount of therapy. 7 years is nothing for the murder she PLANNED. She should have gotten first degree, and should still be in prison. I wonder if she's gotten enough self esteem by now...
There might have been a very simple and human explanation to this sad occurence- perhaps Bernadette had a crush on Kirsten and got upset when her feelings were rejected by Kirsten? It does happen and maybe she had fallen in love with Kirsten? The movie makes no sense because why would she have wanted to befriend her if she felt Kirsten was cruel?
Its a sad situation for both families and no one is saved
I have to agree with anonymous above about reading the thread on here and comparing it to a "train wreck", I couldn't stop reading, wondering what could possibly be said next haha. People pretending to be Bernadette??? Really? Wow, I guess all we can do is pray for this person. (Seems odd that the story changed as soon as Kirsten's family member posted though).
Anyway, I was teased and I don't care how mean some of those people were to me, I never thought they should die. We do know that Bernadette followed her, pretty much stalked her as prey. I feel that she was just desperate about keeping anyone from knowing whatever happened in that car that night. We'll never know what the real conversation was because obviously the only person who can tell us is the one who killed for that conversation not to be revealed. So, she stalked her and was able to stab her. I don't know about you folks but I can't imagine being able to stick a knife into someone over and over. My point is just that people have to remember that someone lost their life and that, although, I can empathize with Bernadette, that something more than being bullied seemed to be wrong with her. I hope that she received the help that she needed.
Nothing can change what happened so I pray that Bernadette will make amends with God and herself and that the Kirsten's family can find peace from the memories of their loved one lost.
This is such a sad story. It's a no win situation for any body. The Costa Family will forever suffer and I'm sure life has never been the same. At the same time the Protti Family has suffered too. They will live with the nagging feeling of why didn't I know something was wrong? How did I not know that my daughter (Bernadette) was in such pain? Could this have been prevented?
I was just 4 st the time of this murder, yet this case has always interested me. I was pick on terribly in school. People made fun of me, threw food at me, and ever poured soda over my head for fun. Once a girl even broke into my gym locker and peed on my school clothes. Though Bernadette's actions were not excusable they were completely understandable. Kids today can be RELENTLESS. I could of been Bernadette easily.
Some people deserve a second chance in life. Others don't. I think that Bernadette was just pushed to her breaking point. Sometimes people snap - other have more self control. This doesn't make her an evil person, maybe just weaker than others at the time. Please keep in mind. All the evidence that the police had against Bernadette was circumstantial; had she of not confessed, she may have never been caught. Also, she tried to make a plea of 2nd degree murder. Kristen's family said no, they wanted a trial in hopes that she would be convicted of 1st degree murder. Bernadette being a juvenille would have recieved the same sentance no matter 1st or 2nd degree. What was the, the purpose of dragging out the case. I think that Bernadette's time has been served and that she has a right to her privacy. I hope that life has turned out well for her and that she was able to move past her teenage years.
I agree with the two people who commented on this thread being like watching a "train wreck"... and yet, I too couldn't stop reading. Anyway, I do remember watching this movie in my teens. It is such a sad story. I hope both sets of families can somehow find peace now.
I have no clue what compelled me to google this topic again, but I did, here I am, and what the hell??? Someone pretending to be Bernadette? In the same forum where a Costas family member (maybe) is posting? Jacked up, people.
Anyhoo, here's an interesting point. Before I go on, I would like to point out that I do not condone murder. I just don't. So before anyone comments back about my eternal security, please read my whole perspective.
In the last few years, there has been a shift in the social strata of high school; the focus now is on teenage suicide due to incessant bullying. The public is outraged, demanding that said bullies be prosecuted and schools be held accountable for failing to intervene. So, where is the line drawn? What do we think and what do we want? Do we understand how a child could be so insecure, so belittled that they are driven to take their own life, but we think that same kid is a monster if they take another? How does that even make sense? If you believe a kid can be driven to take their own life, you must believe they can also go to the other extreme. Either way, families are altered forever, no one will ever really move past it, and everyone is affected.
There isn't a damn thing to do about the superficiality of high school and, unfortunately, the same stereotypes tend to follow us into adulthood. This is a true statement. People trying to find themselves, find some measure of individuality while also trying to fit into their environments, their only real reference point is their peers......it's confusing, it's difficult, and really, it never stops.
I guess I don't really think we can say that the parents should have done this or that, or that anyone deserves to burn in hell, or that anyone is a monster. It's circular, really.....if Kirsten was really an intolerable bully, she obviously was dealing with similar self esteem issues as Bernadette. If she wasn't and Bernadette just felt inferior, this is also a miserable kind of pain. No one really knows, do they? The underlying issue is low self esteem, period, as simple as it sounds. Just my opinion.
I'm in complete agreement with the poster above me. All I can say is wow. You people are insane. This girl/woman is a killer. She planned this murder, she was deterred only to stalk her victim all the way back home. Bullying is a sad part of growing up, millions of people have been bullied, to extremes far worse than this psycho probably endured. So should we all start murdering our bullies? No, most people don't murder their bullies. This is insane. To blame the parents of Kirsten's parents for not raising a better daughter?? This woman should still be in prison. There are many legitimate arguments for killing another person, Bullying is not one of them. I hope some young impressionable child who is being bullied and feels like it will define their whole life doesn't take all you lunatics sympathy for an excuse to go murder their bully! High school can be horrible but you know what? It's a small and usually insignificant part of your life in hindsight and this is what should be taught to these kids! Sometimes bosses can be terrible bullies, should we kill ur bosses too? Or should we teach our kids that life is not fair and you cannot go killing people because life has not been fair to you? You are all nuts and I hope one day your kids don't bully somebody who decides to play god.
I just saw her "story" on the show Dangerous Women. I don't believe that she should have been released from prison. SHE IS NOTHING BUT A MURDERER. Who cares that she has seemingly gotten her life back to order???!! She killed another young girl just because of her jealously! It was heartbreaking watching a recent interview with her brother. I wish her current picture would be posted just so I know who to stay clear of. There is NO WAY that someone like that could "pay her debt to society". Murder is murder!
She deserved more time and a higher degree of conviction, but thats only my opinion. she did serve her time, she will have to always live in fear of judgment and ridicule from others and to have admitted her crime showed remorse and character, "a good man is not without sin." She deserves to have her privacy of who she is now.
I'm an educator and see how young the bulling behavior starts. I see it in grade school and if it goes accepted and undeterred,it is bound to cause devestating results. Many don't know their child is bullied ,and even more don't know their child is a bully. All of this starts at home.Love for self and love for others begins with the love mom and dad show each other, themselves, their children,and others. Whether we like each other, agree with each other, are the same, or polar opposites, we must RESPECT each other. If we do not and do not teach our children to do the same, we can expect more & more of this type of disrespect followed by violence. Let us not forget the past, so we may learn from it today, and better OUR tomorrow. With love for all victims,perpertrators,and those who watch us become one or the other.
I saw this story on Deadly Women today and agree with the later posters. "I didn't make cheerleading and feel inferior to others" is no reason to murder.
I, too, was "bullied". Did it hurt? Of course, but, I got over it, moved on and am a much stronger person for it. In no way would I have considered murdering someone simply because I FELT I was being bullied.
Bernadette deserved a much harsher sentence. May God bless the Costas. I am sorry your daughter had to endure the torture of this sick monster.
I went to Miramonte with Kristen and Bernadette and knew both socially. Both girls had a lot of friends, and both were likable but for different reasons. Kirsten was charismatic and outgoing, Bernadette seemed sweet and shy. Kirsten was in no way a "bully" and did not torment Bernadette. Bernadette was clearly full of self-hatred and longed to be Kirsten. It seems to me she could have longed to been any number of other girls since she wanted so badly to have what it appeared other people had. I was with Kirsten days before Bernadette murdered her and I remember laughing because she was just so darn cute and funny. After the murder (and living in horrific fear for months until B was arrested), I sat next to Bernadette in a class for months and remember her as a nice person who was always smiling. Strange for a person who was hiding the fact that she murdered a friend and even passed a lie detector test. I believe she is a sociopath and cant imagine she feels any remorse at this point. You cant imagine how this affected our entire school and community. I dont think Bernadette was a victim of Kirsten or any kind of "bullying". Bernadette was a victim of her own jealousy, low self esteem, and targeted Kirsten as the one responsible for her misery.
Anonymous said...
I don't feel that Protti can ever truly pay her debt -- possibly to the standards of legal system, but not to the victim and her family. Perhaps she is remorseful, possibly she has changed her life for the better. If so, those are healthy steps for her.
However, there are some choices where genuine remorse does not cancel the life long consequences of that action. Forgiveness is not obligated nor should it be expected. 'Closure' takes on a hollow and symbolistic tone -- Protti has been allowed to move on from her choice, but Kirsten remains rigidly in memory, beyond appeal. The fear of harassment and emotional fallout that Ms. Protti carries with her now is a small price to pay for the terror and suffering that she inflicted on a young woman who caused her no harm.
"When Stacey/Kirsten accused her of trying to hit on her in the car when they were suppose to go to some dinner, I think Bernadette snapped. Belonging was the most important thing to her and Stacey had the power to destroy her. So, she had enough of Staceys garbage and snapped. A person can only take so much of this crap until they snap. I see it all the time in my work and those who are involved in school shootings. This is the basis for this stuff. Peer Abuse!
Folks, please get educated on this serious problem we have in our society. This is not "girls being girls" with their cattiness and hurtful behavior. This is full on silent, covert abuse. Even though this story was very rare back in the 80's, its all too common now. We do not enable rape, child, domestic or elder abuse so why enable peer abuse?"
Oh my Lord. Complete effing nonsense. I've read the Rolling Stone article. And I know the movie (which, BTW, is fictionalized--her name wasn't Stacy/Kristen, it was Kristen) quite well. The worst Kristen ever did was laugh at someone behind their back. She did NOT "abuse" anyone. She was a normal, snotty teenage girl--every one of us has acted this way towards some other person in our lives, and if you say you have you're a liar. Kristen didn't systematically torture Bernadette. She didn't stalk her and make her life miserable, the way those teenagers in South Hadley MA tormented poor Phoebe Prince (THAT was bullying, not this namby-pamby crap). Kristen just didn't want to be her friend. That's allowed. We've all done it. If you are trying to mitigate someone's MURDER by hinting they somehow had it coming because they didn't hold hands and sing Kum Ba Ya every morning with the killer, you're sick. Grow a thicker skin. Even in the movie, "Stacy" wasn't that bad to "Angela" (she was much harder on the Goth girl).
Peer abuse. Oh my Lord. Serious, actual bullying such as happened to Phoebe Prince--THAT'S abuse. Kristen and Bernadette? Normal teenage girl cattiness. It happens, and it happens all your life. No one is obliged to be anyone's friend.
Finally if you were actually professionally involved in studying school shootings, you would know that is a complete myth that any of them involve bullying. Read Dave Cullen's book "Columbine"--that's one of the first myth he debunks. These kids kill because they're messed up, not because they "snap." You are finding excuses for murder.
I dot see how anyone who has just watched the movie can comment on what eather of the girls are like or any part of this I only know myself from what I have seen so have no comment on the killing only to say I feel bad for both families my heart goes out to both. I am a student and study people and psychology and all I can say each person is diffrent and things affect is in many ways they wouldn't affect others so to say that you were bullied and didn't kill someone is one thing but that is you depreshion is a terrible thing and makes people do terrible things we are learning more and more with research how the brain is affected and duffrent triggers affect people in many ways this girl had an outburst when she was a young girl and she has served her time so let her alone to live her life I'm sure she thinks about what she did every day and will have to live with it for the rest of her life that's hell on earth.
I just watched "deadly delinquents" on ID and have always been interested in this case. First, I'm not so sure it was premeditated, if it was, why didn't Bernadette attack Kirsten in the car before kirsten left? The movie made Bernadette look like she was bullied, but I don't believe it after i seen the story on ID (whether she was or not, no reason to kill someone). Second, how did she get released after serving less than 9 years??? Even Karen Severson (a killer among friends) served 21 years and she never admitted to killing Missy. Third, how can a killer receive a new identity? In the state i live in, a request for a name change has to be posted in the papers for at least six months before it will be granted, couldn't the costas have opposed this? and does this mean she doesn't have a record now???? how is that possible? My ex husband sexually abused our daughter (and worked for the FBI) and for a price he could have his record expunged, but i wouldn't think a "murderer" could. I know change of name is public record and i really hope she is exposed, it's not fair that she was able to go on with her life, obtain degrees, a good job, get married, have children etc.
Wow, I hope this murder is sought out and her new life is ruined like the life that she took and eye for an eye, Bernadette , took a life of a young girl, Kirsten . Kristen won't have a family, she won't get to go to college, boyfriends, finance , a wedding, it's all empty dreams that Kristen family has to suffer, and Benadette, has a family and friends, and a education, and great job. How is this fair? Bernadette should of been sentenced to DEATH, just like Kristen was given without choice. Bernadette should have had to set on death roll why her attorneys went through all of her appeals, and then she should of had a needle in her arm. I also now that God says not to take another life and she did, so I at least know one thing about Bernadette, our Courts made of failed Kristen's herself and her family, but God will not, because Bernadette will burn in hell, so it does not matter how many times she changed her name, job, address , Kristen is a bright light with not pain and has wings in heaven, Bernadette with be burned ash one day, sooner that later we could all hope.
Its just seems so unfair that Bernadette has an education, got married and have kids. Kirsten didnt get anything of that.
Sometimes, Bernadette couldnt stand to be bullied. I was like Bernadette when i was in High School... i couldnt make the Drill Team, Colorguard, Band and Choir. So i tried a club that has no tryouts, FCCLA,Student Council, Track and Bible Club. I wish Bernadette has these choices that i picked.
If she try a club with no tryouts, trust me, her life can be easier and she can make more friends. So dont be all crying and didnt make a team, cuz there is alot of clubs out there you can join in.
To everyone who is so intent on ruining Bernadette's life now, think. You all have your reasons as to why she should be revealed, and whether you are right or not I can't determine, because most of us here really know nothing about the case or the people involved other than what we have heard and read. If you are so set on ruining Bernadette's life remember it is not just her life you would be ruining. It would be her husband and her children's lives that would be severely damaged as well. Innocent people who had nothing to do with the crime. You talk about how Bernadette played God but arent you doing the same when you condemn her to hell, and her family to a life of misery? That would make you the same as her. I am not making excuses for her, I'm making excuses for her husband and children.
Every time the movie comes on, a firestorm is set, and my past comes back to haunt me again. Please don't contribute to the witch hunt.
I was best friends with peter at the time of his sisters murder. What a shock! My family moved away from orinda soon after that. Orinda was and is full of rich snobs and the costas family and even myself were no exception. there was a feeling of superiority ingrained in all the little rich brats of orinda. It took me lots of pyschadelics and years of introspection to overcome the rich brainwash ego mentality of "orinda". In a way it's no wonder burnadette snapped, she felt isolated and cut down by the rich snobs. As far as kirsten goes, she was sweet and i enjoyed her company, i remember her room. Certainly kirsten never intended any sort of harm or hurt to burnadette. there was a huge screw loose in burnadettes mind and it came out that night. The costas's need to move on and quit trying to beat a dead horse. suing people is so white trash. They are already rich beyond imagination so why do they need to take from burnadette? Greedy thinking if you ask me. Burnadette hopefully has become a better person and not a closet serial killer. Such a sad story all around.
They both are victims! Kristen was a victim of Bernadette! bernadette was victim of circumstance and the fact that she didnt have enough confidence within herself to overcome the jealousy and envy that she felt toward Kristen!Technically they were victims of each other!Although Kristen didnt know it!
I saw the movie today. And that is what it is, a movie.
Truth, a girl killed another girl. A defenseless girl because? Who cares. Murder is murder. And there is never a reason to kill another.
To protect "Bernies" indenity and acknowledge her plea's of forgiveness (if it really is her) is just a waste of time
Poor girl she murdered was denied life and a voice in all this today.
She is lucky it is not me with the information. Her picture and her name would be on the site in plain view.
This murderer does not deserve a "free ticket to ride" because she is sorry, or nice, or picked on or any of the other pathetic things that are said. We all suffer at the hands of others and their actions and we don't chose to stab them to death.
Wake up people!!! She is a damn murderer. Her victim is DEAD, stabbed to death and unable to speak for herself.
The public should be outraged that anyone would want to hold, hide, and coddle this woman.
phyllisg said...
Bernie is a murderer, not a victim. PERIOD. Shame on everyone who tries to turn this story into anything else. Shame to anyone who states they are hiding her identity for a greater cause. This woman does not deserve a "free ticket to ride". She took a life of another person, a defenseless person, the real victim here. This is life and we all must learn to live among others. Some will be nice to us and some will not. We may not like what our boss does, our husband, our parents, our friends, our enemies do....but that does not give us the right to murder. We can not murder everyone that hurts our feelings or behaves in a way that breaks our heart.
I can't believe there is anyone who would call "Bernie" a victim, feel sorry for her or want to protect her identity. What happens when she snaps again? What if it is her neighbor, her husband, her kids? It should be society that decides if they want to live near her, work with her or have her in their life. Instead lets keep her name, picture and life a secret. Poor her~ PLEASE! What about the poor girl she killed and her voice in all this? We have to accept the word of a murderer to tell us the circumstances and truth about the killing? How self serving is that. I pray for everyone around the "murderer" and don't even know it. I pray that they don't hurt "Bernies" feelings, make her mad or have something she feels she has a right to.
I just saw this case on TV and was shocked that ALL she got was 7 or 9yrs, I know she was a teen, but to have it in your heart to murder someone over such trivial things because you didn't "measure up" or jealousy is not only sick but says a lot about your heartlessness. I agree that the parents of the deceased teen should keep trying to get this sick individual to pay, it's not about the money but about getting some sort of justice which was denied to them 27yrs ago. I would post her picture up too, real name, etc....Her victim can speak no more, nor did she have any kids to carry on her legacy, so stop with the foolish talk about the murderer being a victim and paying her debt to society, I'm sure you were all for O.J. Simpson being sued, as well he should have been. I'm with Phyllisg.
i was tormented for over 10 years in school. I know right from wrong and would never kill anyone. I had very low self-esteem that I went through a period where i became suicidal.
There is no excuse for what this woman has done.
Anyone who defends her is just as bad.
It sickens me that she requests the public ends the search for her new identity and images of her.
She uses her children as a shield. Once again blaming other people for her own inadequacies.
Take accountability for your actions. Your children will find out about what YOU did.
I only hope these children do not end up committing suicide like Madoff's kid.
This woman has not only savagely murdered her classmate, but could potentially ruin more lives because of HER actions.
I only hope her identity is revealed and the people who are close to her distance themselves. Let her know what it is like to lose everything. It still will not come close to the horror the victims parents must relive everyday of their life.
My heart goes out to the victims parents. Not only must they relive the savage murder of their beautiful daughter, but another horrific event - protti being released.
PROTTI - you paid your debt and did your time? Tell that to the victims parents.
Was Protti actually bullied by the girl she savagely murdered? Or did Protti create this in her head?
Protti seems to have been to weak to accept her inadequacies and project it on a girl who worked hard to be as talented as she was. I imagine Protti couldn't stand the fact this girl was a genuine person and talented. Protti is a danger to society. This woman savagely murdered her classmate and lured her. This is a sick person.
A girl that tormented me in high school had wonderful parents. The girl's younger sister was actually a friend of mine . I actually met her 5 years after we graduated high school. She told me she was sorry for the things she did to me and she confessed why she did what she did. She told me she was jealous that i was an "A student". She told me when her parents had me tutor her sister it made her feel worthless and told me that in her head she created this illusion that her parents loved me or did not love her. She told me she realized it was later on that a lot of what was in her head was due to her anxiety and issues she had within her self. She realized her parents loved her but it was the only way she could deal with the fact she was not "an a student" by blaming me and convincing herself her parents did not love her.
I can imagine protti having distorted thoughts. She probably wanted to believe so badly that krista was cruel to her to justify why she hated her and was so jealous. I bet krista was kind to her and if she ever said anything to her as even a joke not meant to be cruel protti twisted it and believed what she wanted to.
I feel so horrible for kristas parents.
PROTTI is a sick person and hopefully finds her way back to prison.
Happened to OJ! Maybe she will get a dui
Sin is sin and has no degree. In other words the 10 commandments did not have fine print that said one sin was greater than another. The bible does state that if you commit ANY sin if you truly repent and ask for forgiveness it shall be given. If anyone who commits a sin ask forgiveness and continues to commit that sin over and over again them it's apparent they have not truly repented and will be judged by God accordingly. I've had the unfortunate opportunity to have a love one murdered and his murderer is now free living amongst us. From what I'm told he lives a quiet unassuming life. We forgave him 21 years ago as we knew holding on to hurt would never give us our loved one back. If he has truly repented and asked God for forgiveness I believe God will show mercy as he will Bernadette.
She was never bullied by Kristen. Kristen was right to ignore her plea for friendship because is clearly a SOCIAL CLIMBING MURDERER! To Bernadette, Kirsten was her ticket to being popular. She is a pathetic excuse for a human being..
I never like bullies, but Kirsten never did anything that would warrant such extreme reaction...
I lived near the Costas' in Orinda and they were friends of mine. Their kids played with my kids and Berit and I were good friends. No one will ever know what took place in the car between Bernadette and Kirsten that night. Bullying should not be condoned if indeed it happened in this instance. Why would Kirsten agree to go with Bernadette if she had bullied her? They were going to a new members' dinner by the Bob-O-Links and Bernadette was a new member. Does that sound like she was bullied by them? Bernadette had achieved much in highschool and was a PEER COUNSELOR and comforted in the classroom those who were close to Kirsten. It is my understanding that the murder was premeditated, planned and carried out. She told her parents she was babysitting and could she borrow the family car? She used the knife a kitchen knife from her house. I believe she was a psychiopath who never expressed remorse which is the troubling part in this saga. Several kids were thought to be the murderer and they were run out of town because of it. Orinda had many faults. All this is to say that it is in the past which we cannot change. The movie is a distortion with its own agenda and story line and I resent that it made a dime on this tragedy. But that characteristic permeates our society - greed, it is what drives our country. But put this tragedy to bed unless you get off on dwelling on something most of you had little to do with. We can't change what happened. The Costas' have moved on and I am sure the Prottis have too. Hopefully Bernadette has gotten the help she needs to change from the person who committed this horrendous crime. Please don't keep this discussion going to fill some void like reading People magazine does. Go out and counsel kids in school about bullying, values and compassionate goals. Coach a swim or baseball team, set up a communication channel for kids to turn to when they need help. Do something positive rather than spend time hashing something that happened so many years ago. So many in the neighborhood where Kirsten lived have moved both physically and emotionally.
The only reason 7 years is "long enough" is because she was underage at the time of the MURDER. I wonder, if she had killed your family member if you'd feel the same way. I know I surely wouldn't. I don't care if she's suffering. She deserves to feel guilty for the rest of her life for killing someone, even a "bully."
I found out who she is. All the clues are on this thread. And the author is right ... she has changed her name completely. Her eyes and smile is exactly the same as her religion. Her nose is different. She paid her debt to society and should not be ridiculed. But she is a Christian ... she should not be hiding from her past. If she wants forgiveness, she need to forgive herself first. Hiding is cowardly. Wondering what I should do.
Come on Piteous, dish!! I wouldn't harass her, just am curious about her. I am within 2 years of age difference with these girls, Kirsten I think would be 44 today and I am 42. At the time it occurred I was a teen unhappy in school thinking maybe Kirsten did contribute to her own demise with her attitude and treatment of Bernadette but now, many years later of course I have matured and think differently. As much as I remember and understand that feeling of not being good enough for the standards of your peers in high school, I now have matured and seen a lot in life which makes me stop and think what a horrible death Kirsten was forced to die. It does seem awfully unfair that Bernadette is allowed to carry on and apparently have such a great life while Kirsten's ended horribly.
PLEASE...do nothing with the information you have disclosing her present identity. Regardless of YOUR opinion that she should own up to her past misdeads, it is CERTAINLY NOT YOUR PLACE to enforce YOUR belief. And, since you mention her Christian beliefs, I will infer that you, too, are Christian. So, as a Christian, do you think it wise to expose her past on the Internet - for ANYONE to see - given that she is a mother? Wife? Do you believe YOU could live with someone going all, vigilante on her children? Her husband? Can you HONESTLY say that you KNOW someone won't see your post and think, "Hey! I know that lady. ...and...OMG! She killed a child! And she only served 7 years in prison?!? WTF?!?!? Hey, wait! She HAS a child!! I'ma go kill HER child, because...the Bible says, 'Eye for an eye!'"
As a PS: The Bible also tells us to forgive. It's not our place to take revenge. Instead, we are told to wait for God's wrath. "It is mine to revenge. I will repay." Romans, 12:19
As someone who studies murderers, serial killers, and the truly ill individuals of this world I can safely say that the "crimes of passion" are the worst types of murder. We have to understand the fueled hate that arises for an individual to so openly murder someone in cold blood. Bernadette, you not only went at her you stabbed her 8 times. I'm sure you felt soo accomplished. You must have been at the top of your game! Except for one thing you didn't forsee after murdering your "competition", the fact that nobody cared to make you the next it girl. I can imagine the constant paces back and fourth wondering why you still weren't noticed, eventually your "guilt" turned into a means to gain more than just high school popularity. This murder is your trophy, I'm certain. Do you enjoy hearing about yourself and reading how sad life was for you living in Kirstens shadow? Do you like knowing people still talk about what you did?
You may have fooled many but I know the real thought process of people like you. I don't judge but I had to let you know some people know you killed her because it felt good to stab her and see her dead and gone. The only real change is the anti-psychotic medication you must still take to this day...
My deepest condolences to the Costas family and anyone who loved Kirsten. Don't believe everything you see on tv.
I really doubt this is a true bully situation.
Before anyone gets mad, I was bullied on a regular basis throughout middle and high school. I even had kids tell me to kill myself, beat me up, and throw garbage at me. I had two friends, and I have Major Depressive Disorder. I was having suicidal tendencies (take from that what you will).
I NEVER got the feeling that this was what Kirsten did to Bernadette. From what I've read (and it's been a lot), it seems to me as though Kirsten simply disliked Bernadette, and made it clear, but otherwise steered clear. Big deal. There are people I dislike, and I won't hide it, but neither will I pick on them. That's life. Not everyone was meant to be friends. I also know that some people try to kiss ass, and I HATE it when they do it to me. It comes across as desperate and pathetic. Maybe Kirsten sensed what Bernadette was thinking and didn't want to just be used as a social ladder, and disliked Bernadette. That is NOT bullying. That's being honest about someone you don't want to have anything to do with.
Seeing how things turned out, Kirsten was probably following a gut feeling that was right.
I agree with Frankie DelToro. Kirsten couldn't avoid seeing Bernadette's desperation to be friends with her, especially after she was lured out on false premises.
I am sure Kirsten would have been irritated at Bernadette's desire, especially since there was no good reason for it other than to advance her own popularity. Bernadette had plenty of people who respected and liked her. Kirsten was not necessary. But these ingrained anxieties and desires took over her practical mind.
Good grief. What is with all the drama? Why do you need to find out what she looks like and to "out" her? That is what the legal system is for, and she served the time assigned to her. No, I don't condone what she did, who would? However, I do believe there are some murders that are committed with less premeditation and malice than others. Bernadette was immature and dealt with her feelings in the worst possible way - acted out in violence. I feel for both families. Nothing will ever right what Bernadette did. However, you all look a little bloodthirsty here trying to track her down as if you are the judge and jury. Put your energy towards something positive, like finding out if there is a memorial for Kristen or some other outlet. Stop being catty. You know what you've done, you don't know what you're going to do. Let it alone.
On the TV news, the high school principal - Mr.Ed Sax called Angela a "sick kid". In this entire case, arrogance starts at the top - Mr.Sax leading the way. The man was a social clod who reveled over his athletes and cheerleaders. If Angela were my friend, I would have told her to switch schools, where culture and spirituality are emphasized and not the dictum of Santa Mera high school. Imagine how bad Angela felt when Mr. Sax encountered her & Stacy working at the Attendance Desk. "So how is the prettiest office girl today?". He is over the moon about Stacy trying out for cheerleading. "Stacy, our school needs someone like you to represent it. You are perfect". Meanwhile Angela probably felt her face go hot. She said, "Mr.Sax, I am trying out also". He gives her a blank stare. That about shows how little regard he had for Angela.
I think a majority of you are also forgetting that Bernadette was in fact a CHILD when this all happened. She served her time as the LAW stated. I only just saw the movie today here in Australia. but as movies add more fake things like drama for viewers i cannot base any opinions on either girls due to this.
What Angela/Bernadette did was wrong, very wrong and irreversibly wrong, but you have to understand the kind of power that people like Stacey/Kristen have over their peers. The kind of power that can make or break people. Ruining people's lives is sometimes just fun and games to these people, and I suppose Kristen's parents should have taught her to be a little more compassionate towards people who maybe don't have it as good as she does. Bernadette was facing almost unbearable humiliation if Kristen had lived to tell about their conversation that night. I hope rich popular kids can learn something from this. May Kristen not have died in vain. R.I.P. Kristen.
I just wanted to say the reason this interests me is I am just interested in true crime. I read In Cold Blood in High School and was hooked. I found this blog because today I was thinking about watching Dr. Phil tomorrow. Another case with teens girls will be discussed with one of the girls involved.
The Lifetime movies are usually made more viewer friendly so folks will watch. I have seen a few of Ann Rule's book made with major changes for the movies. I have to question if the victim was so mean in real life. I have to question if Bernadette needed help before this happened. From what I have read here and on other sites, she must be very intelligent and a decent person. Though her crime was major, many of us messed up in our youth. This is why people under 18 and 21 are not allowed to do many things. My gut feeling was her impulse control was nonexistent that night.
I wish her the best. She legally paid her dues for her crime. I am 58 and might be interested in this crime until I am gone. But I would never want to write or say something negative about people I do not know. It is what it is. And it is interesting.
Unknown said...
I'd like to know how Bernadette has paid her dues after only nine years incarceration. An even more famous case, with 14 year old Caril Ann Fugate in 1958 had her accused but not fully proven of shooting and stabbing one of a teenage couple. She served 18 years in prison, and like Bernadette, has not gotten into any brushes with the law. Ms. Fugate is reviled to this day by many people who still follow that case. Fugate lives a life devoid of the successes Ms. Protti enjoys these days, and is far from well to do. I am more inclined to believe Caril Fugate has paid her dues, and regrets her past life involving Charles Starkweather, the killer of 11 people from Dec. 1, 1957 to Jan. 29, 1958. In regard to Bernadette, she may well be sorry for what she is known for a fact to have done, but 9 years is hardly punishment for that degree of murder. FINE, she was only 15, Caril was, again, 14, and goaded into whatever she may have been guilty of. "Dear" little Bernadette acted on her own. No justice for Kirsten at all.
Luanne Summerour Johnson said...
Simply put, according to California Law the year Bernadette was convicted she received the maximum. I think Miss Fugate was a very lucky woman to get parole. The year and State she was convicted in dictated her punishment. No one is trying to be a minimalist. If we judge everyone who has been in jail/ prison by our emotions, this country would never give anyone a second chance. If we want longer sentences, we must be proactive in voting and voicing our concerns to the people we elect.
